Massage Therapy

Why

Massage Therapy is important?

Massage therapy has its beginning in ancient times. For centuries manual therapies have been serving us to improve our posture, get rid of aches and pains, manage injury recovery better, reduce muscle tension and enhance our mood. While muscles relax and stretch, the lymphatic system kicks in and drains toxins away from the body. With that the oxygen flows, blood and all the good nutrients are being delivered to the cells, tissues, fibres and muscles helping them function better. With stress hormone (cortisol) levels going right down, and happy hormones ( dopamine, serotonin and endorphins) shooting up, you find yourself in your Zen Zone and you will feel amazing not only during treatment but also for days after.

Types of Massage

Full body relaxing ( swedish) massage

This is a massage for almost everyone. The pressure can be adjusted to your liking, from very slow and superficial touch to more energizing, deeper strokes. It can include front and back of legs, back, arms, shoulder, neck, head and face.

Deep Tissue massage

This is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of body tissues. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tensions in the body through slower and deeper strokes on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibres of muscles, tendons and fascia.

Sports Massage

Apart from releasing and reducing any tensions, sports massage also treats injuries. These massages are a little more invasive and penetrate muscles much deeper therefore an adequate rest is needed after to allow a full muscle recovery, usually 24-48 hours.

Effective

Techniques

Kneading

By applying pressure to various portions of the body with your thumbs or your palms, kneading is arguably the easiest motion for beginners to do. The purpose of this technique is to move the muscle away from the bone, which helps to lessen muscle spasms.

Vibration Or Shaking

This technique typically does not involve a lot of pressure, as the idea is mostly to provide a soothing sensation for the muscles and nerves within the body. Many therapists have also recommended using this method to massage over scar tissue as well as around it.

Tapotement or Tapping

In a tapping massage, the hands can be cupped so that only the tips of the fingers and the edges of the palm touch the skin, or they can be laid side by side and tapped on the skin. You can modify the procedure to tap in a specific way if that seems more comfortable for your client.
